GSA production ceases in 1986, and the Visa in 1988. Suddenly Citroën lacks a mid-range product positioned between the AX and the BX. The situation is urgent. The ZX arriving in early 1991 provides the perfect solution!
The press and Citroën aficionados immediately recognise it as a reference saloon in view of its compact, modern style, its innovative auto-directional rear axle assuring exceptional roadholding, its sliding rear seat, and other smart features. Its elegant yet restrained style clearly matches well the aspirations of compact car owners in the 1990s, so coupe and station-wagon versions are quickly proposed. The ZX is the first Citroën to be manufactured in China, from 1992 to 2014. It close relative, the Xsara, replaces it in Europe in late 1997.
